One of the things that we here at Pirate’s Cove want to do is be able to involve future generations in what we are doing. With that in mind we are starting what we hope will be a new tradition. We are going to involve kids in a full cast production of a story that is still to be determined. We hope to pass down our love of literature, and educate kids about our little corner of the publishing industry.

Since this is a trial run, this class is closed to everyone but the members of The Saint Thomas Aquinas Homeschoolers of the Rochester, NY area.

Pirate’s Cove, a division of Flying Island Press publishing, is offering a workshop class this year. The class will be generally about the publishing industry and more specifically about the production of audio books.

A brief synopsis of the class:

The students, aged 5 to 18, will be acting in, recording, producing and finally releasing a full cast audio production of a story that has yet to be determined.

    The class will cover:

    • The technology behind audio recording, editing and producing
    • Some limited acting techniques (parents with acting experience interested in helping would be greatly appreciated)
    • Some basic copyright law including public domain.
    • some web safety rules
    • Web / Electronic publishing.

    What they will need:

    • access to a computer (They don’t need their own computer but having access to one will help.)
    • 1 hour a week to participate in the class

All recording equipment, scripts and media, and a copy of the final product, will be provided.

The class itself will be divided into two parts. The theory part, where we hope to explain things like how a microphone works, how a computer is used to edit audio, copyright, the publishing industry, and older techniques of recording. The practical part, where we actually use those skills to produce a full cast audio production.
