Most of us artistic types, I think it’s fair to say, don’t fully understand things like contracts and anything else that has to do with the business side of the house.  Thankfully there are some people who can help you with that and we’d like to point you in the right direction.

First you need to read some posts on contracts by author J. Daniel Sawyer.

Second, if you consider yourself to be part of the “New Media” movement, I would point you to a new organization called The Association of New Media Artists and Producers.  This too has Mr. Sawyer’s name all over it.  The site and organization are still under construction, but there’s a good amount of information and a number of links over there and they should keep you busy until there’s more.

I particularly like their mission statement:

To encourage excellence, foster talent, and promote business savvy among new media artists and producers through education and advocacy.

We want to treat the artists that we work with fairly and I think that making sure that you’re all properly educated (and in the process making sure that we are too) is the right thing to do.  After all, every single person on staff is a creative of one stripe or another.
